Welcome to my first Reveal and Review!
I am excited to share with you my new product, Cursive Practice Using California Facts. I just finished it this week and just in time for my classroom. I am also reviewing Gold Rush Lapbook by Thank A Teacher. If you teach the Gold Rush, this is a must have!
Reveal
As you know, I teach a 4th/5th grade combo. This year I wanted to use my Cursive Using Quotes from US Presidents for my 5th graders, but I didn’t have anything for my 4th graders relating to California history. So, I created one. Like the US Presidents, I want to create a cursive book for Open House in June. I modeled it after the US President’s cursive where students get a sentence or two to write in cursive about the history they are studying. I won’t be using all of the sheets in the packet because we only have 8 weeks or so left of school. Next year, I plan on starting earlier to create books with more cursive entries.
How to use this product! I have already taught and reviewed how to make cursive letters – upper and lower case. Now students will choose 12 different facts to write. I will give them a copy of two facts each week. Students will do their best cursive on these sheets and when all are filled out we will make a book. All cursive sheets need to be cut on perforated lines and then I would trim the white on the sides to make it look balanced. Next, put the cover on construction paper – I think it looks better. Then bind all the pages, front cover, and back.
Now that’s what I am going to do, however, I think it would be great to just give every student a California fact and have them draw a picture that relates to the fact. You could then make posters with picture and cursive fact and display them in the window. Nice modification!

Review
Thank A Teacher has created a fantastic Gold Rush Lapbook to use with students learning about the California Gold Rush! It has all the directions you need to walk through teaching the students what to do for each part and all the templates students will be using. The cover has a easy to view example of a final product too. The lapbook cover has the California seal where students can learn about what is on the seal and why those objects were chosen. The inside of the lapbook contains fun organizers for information covering mining equipment, routes to California, famous people, lasting effects of the Gold Rush, and letters written home from miners. There are also some alternate choices to focus on Chinese miners and minorities in the gold fields.
What a great way to learn about the Gold Rush and have something to display in your classroom!
